Cubs gave a little butt kicking. Missed most of due to partying and yapping on the party deck.

I heard yesterday it was the largest crowd in Sloan Park history and broke the attendance record for any spring training game!  Next comes Wrigley on May 22nd Chicagoans!

Hey Bicentennials... we need your help with the Roll Call Project!

The LTAA is updating our database for all veterans, especially those MIA and KIA from the Vietnam era who attended Lane Tech.  In partnership with our new affinity group, “The Cavalry”, (an alumni group focused on supporting JROTC alumni, current cadets, and veterans), we will be working towards a more complete list of these former students. Very little information exists for this population (and veterans in general), so we are asking our members and followers to help.

If you know of a Vietnam-era classmate or family member who served, please contact our office via email at lanetechalumni@gmail.com.

Kindly supply the name, address if available, graduation year, year enlisted or drafted, military branch, rank, any special honors earned, and date of death if applicable.

Thank you for your assistance in bringing these men and women in uniform home to Lane Tech where they can be properly recognized in the Memorial Garden.

In celebration of Womens History Month, women from the classes of '74-'77 shared stories about those first co-ed days at Lane with current students yesterday. Student reactions ranged from confusion to horror when we brought out (Marie Cost McJilton's) old blue gymsuit!  Thanks Marie!

Michelle,

I am glad I could be of some assistance!  Didn't mean to put the fright into those youngsters! I am sure none of the girls in attendance will ever complain about having to wear a t-shirt and pair of shorts for gym. :)

How about some of the Bicentennial guys talking to them about naked swim class? That's one thing the girls didn't have to do. Especially when the heat broke down in the winter! Wearing nothing but a swim cap and a smile!

Frank Powers

You are right about the Cap but I'm not sure about the smile. :(

I still can't believe we did that.  Times sure were different then in many ways.

What about being offered (by some sly upper classmen) to purchase a left-handed T-Square.

Or an elevator pass!
Did you ever give a note to a freshman girl and tell her to deliver it to the teacher in room 127?? Or whatever the number of the swimming pool was. Them listen to the screams when they walked in on a naked swim class!

Then give another note to the same girl and tell her to deliver it to the ROTC room. When she asks where it is, tell her it's under the stands in the stadium. She'll never believe you!

My memories of Lane are mostly good ones, but recent posts here have reminded me of how difficult it was to be a girl there. These posts have brought back terrible memories of being treated horribly just because I was a girl. Some days I didn't want to go to certain classes, because I didn't know what new ways some boys had come up with to torment me.

There were good guys who tried to stop the harassers for whom I will always be grateful, because I was not assertive back then. There are good guys today, too -- like John and Per -- who call out this terrible behavior or try to redirect the conversation. Thank you, guys.

I have no doubt that during the first few days of our freshmen year, we all felt like Harry Potter trying to find platform 9 3/4!

Hello all,

I recently visited one of my cousins, and her younger daughter is Lane Tech class of 2019, which means she will be graduating this June. I took the opportunity this visit to bring some of my old Lane keepsakes from when I went to Lane, to show her some Lane stuff from our time. When she saw the photos of the graduation ceremony that was held outdoors in our stadium, she told me “I wish we would be holding our graduation at Lane”. And she was really bummed about that. Apparently, the Lane class of 2019 will be holding their graduation ceremony at UIC. I was not aware that we do not do graduations at our stadium anymore. When I pressed her on this, she told me that Lane (or CPS) do not own the stadium anymore and sold it some time ago, so they do not do graduation ceremonies there anymore.

So, when did this happen and why was it sold? I am hoping that some of you may know the history of this development and even if it was sold, why Lane cannot do their graduation ceremonies there? I know my cousin’s daughter was really bummed about this as UIC is out of their way and also, isn't the essence of an awesome graduation ceremony to have it at their school?

Well Ken...

Both my sons' Lane graduation ceremonies were held at UIC.

Bleh.

They began with the class of 2006, the year before my oldest son graduated, and they never went back.  The Stadium was a mess back then...  so unstable, everyone had to sit on the visitor's side for football games.  It was condemned in 2006 and under construction in 2007.  I can't find ownership details, but didn't look very hard.  I would guess CPS and/or CParkD.

It would be cool if they could go back to the stadium but admittedly, the back up plan for bad weather was less than ideal. UIC is so impersonal.

Stadium was taken over by CPD many years back.  It is now a multipurpose turf field for athletic events and games   Remember that stadium was built when the school was and never truly kept up.  I was falling apart and CPS hadn't the money and it was a business decision.    I and my son play soccer there often   In fact, will be there tonight at 7pm    And as I type this, I am wearing my senior class ring which I do often    Rarely wear my UofI Champaign ring but wear Lane ring often.  I have shown Lane memorabilia to my kids and others and talk about those by gone days and often, people ask how did all that stuff happen way back then   My son also asked about my senior button?   And why Lane rings were all the same  ?  Tradition and pride   Hey, my button has the number 2 on it    Remember what that meant?   Okay, not a social media guy and rarely post on sites but had to here. Lane is near and dear to me and always will be.   Hope to start participating in '76 get togethers.

The stadium was built as a WPA project and the school never owned it. It was leased to the park district. The recent renovations were paid for as a joint project between DePaul university and the Chicago Cubs. As a result DePaul has right of first refusal for all activities in the stadium and I would bet there is a fee involved as the Catholics do nothing for free.

It appears that the Lane/dePaul field is all Astroturf (R) or similar, and I would caution anyone in a position to weigh in on any similar proposal to reject it soundly.

First, as the US Women's Soccer Team has brought up, artificial turf gets hellaciously hot (and if you slide on it it burns too). Real grass and attendant underlayments got us soccer players muddy, sure, and in many pllaces still does -- which I would argue built/builds character.

Second, that CR*P is plastic, and while we're keeping our kids and ourselves away from plastic straws to help save sea turtles, well, why stop there? Running on AT plus UV light plus wind/snow/rain will, sooner or later, break it down into microbits which we do NOT need (nor do animals) in our lakes/oceans/groundwater.

Besides being Georgette and Andrea's birthdays (Happy Birthday ladies), it's Record Store Day!  What was the first album you bought for yourself?
