Ok Michelle.  I get it.  Playing hookey is how I attended most of my Cubs games at LTHS, anyway.  I should be used to it!

At $341 a night, I don't think I'm going to be at the Hotel Zach any time soon.  Although, it does look very nice.  Besides, I've got a son at Clark & Diversey and his couch is free!

I am going to be up there the weekend of May 4-6.  But, it's a family wedding so, no extras this time.  I do think it's been a while since I've seen any of my peeps up in Rogers Park.  So, I think a get together is in order some time this summer.  Should probably involve a Cubs game.  Reserved grandstand... 1st base side, of course.  And, I would definitely want to attend the Bicentennial Mega-Birthday party so, let's DO IT!  Don't worry, I'm Red Cross certified so we can all survive.  I've got friends on the CFD so we can probably get some EMTs to stand by.  Especially if we buy them a few beers!

You know, we have an EXCELLENT Triple-A team here in Indy, too.  The Indians.  Farm club for the Pirates.  And, our Victory Field is regularly voted the best minor league ballpark in the US.

Quite a few years ago, right after I moved here, I was at an Indians game in their old ballpark, a wonderful old place right in the middle of an industrial neighborhood.  Sitting in the front row, right behind 1st base.  Playing the Oklahoma City club.  Like Wrigley, the field and the players are right up close to the seats.  It was a boring game.  Not much action.  So, I spent the game talking with the 1st base coach for OK City.  Know who the coach was???  ERNIE BANKS!  It was a dream come true!  Got to spend the game chatting with Mr. Cub himself!  The fun of minor league baseball!

John, I hope the celebration of your parents' lives was all you envisioned it to be and more.

Michelle, I have to confess I filled in the 60th Birthday survey as how I'd like it IF I could go, while fairly certain that I won't be able to. But miracles do happen! It would be terrific to see you all and celebrate another milestone BD together (and Ken must attend even though he's a young'un).

Hello all,

The last few days were interesting as I had a number of Lane Tech related encounters. First I got together with some family on Monday (Memorial Day) and they live very close to Lane. As I was driving north up Western Avenue Monday afternoon, I noticed that there was a carnival going on right next to Lane and it was called the Green and Gold Gala. Is this a yearly event?

Later that evening I was driving South on Western Avenue and while I was stopped at the red light at Addison, I was looking at the Lane sign and I saw the #3 in the state message (which was posted here earlier), and also that the Lane Girls soccer team won the city championship.

Tuesday evening, as I was watching the Cubs vs. Pirates game on WGN the Cubs announcers mentioned that the Lane Tech Baseball team has made it to the state sectionals and they posted the picture of the Lane baseball team and talked about them for a bit.

Lane Tech is everywhere! One of my cousin's Daughters will be in the Class of 2019 (one of the family members I visited on Memorial Day). Maybe I can get an invite to her Graduation. That would be so cool.

Looking forward to attending the 60th birthday party.

Are there any plans for getting together before or after the Cubs game Wednesday night? Steve and I already have our own seats so won't be sitting with the rest of the alums, but would still like to say hi to other  '76ers!

There is an all-classes, unofficial group getting together informally at Gallagher Way outside the ballpark at 6:00.  I am told folks should look for the myrtle and gold.  I will be inside the park early to help some of our more senior alums.  We have a couple who are celebrating their 64th wedding anniversary Wednesday night!  The groom is from the class of 1944!  That makes us young whippersnappers!  Also don't forget the Lane JROTC Color Guard will be on the field for the anthem.  And if all else fails, we have made sure that all the 70's alums are seated in the same section so we won't be able to miss each other!  Go Lane Go!  Go Cubs Go!

Have a great time at the game tomorrow evening 76-ers! Go Lane Go and Go Cubs Go!

Ken, I'm still scratching my head over the significance of the birthday number sequence with your daughters, 222-34-55. I was never good at math.

Speaking of numerology (from someone bad at math), linking to you, one of my sons' birthdays is 2/22 and a stepdaughter from a previous relationship was born on 5/5. In my family of origin, my father, aunt, brother and I were all born on the 23rd of a month, with my brother, fellow Laneite Chet Tanaka, being 18 months to the day younger than me. The aunt, my mother's sister, shared the same birthdate 3/23 with my father, in different years. I was born on my parents' first anniversary, so they were married on 5/23. My first grandchild was born on 12/23/14.

Fun stuff,
Grace

Maja Wiesinger (Ramirez)

At the Cubs game, I wanted to talk to more of the 76ers & earlier, but having waked up yesterday at 0430 I realized I probably couldn't make a whole lot of sense by gametime, & so that was that, plus I'm used to being at work all morning and (eventually) getting to sleep at (sometimes) 8pm... & left game early.

Julianne Brand & I have talked about writing a book, about our unique "quota" experiences, and if you'd like to participate we'd love to hear from you. I'll email those whose addresses I got or know, just send back a short indication of your interest, and feel free to forward to those other women of a certain age who know Lane like we did.

What I 'd like best is to meet you, singly or in small groups, for coffee/tea and a chat.

Thanks if you're on the same page, and

Go Lane!

Ken Ortiz

Hello all,

Unfortunately, I did not get to attend or see the TV broadcast of our Alumni night Cubs game on Wednesday evening. I did get to hear most of the game on the radio.  Unfortunately (again), I did not get to experience that wild ninth inning as I went to bed with the score still tied 3-3.

I am sure that for those folks who went to the game, it was an incredible experience to witness that comeback and to partake in the frenzy of victory and celebration at the Friendly Confines. So to those who went to the game and celebrated Lane Tech Alumni night, I invite you to please chime in and let the rest of us in on how your experience went that night. I know it was one of those "I was at that game" stories you can share with others years later.

Also, for those who watched the Cubs TV broadcast that evening, were there any Lane Tech mentions by the announcers or anything Lane that was shown on TV? Please let us know.

I was fortunate (somewhat), as the next day, after I heard about their comeback in the ninth, I discovered that the entire TV broadcast of the Cubs half of the ninth inning was replayed on the MLB Cubs website. So I got to see it for myself. Not the same as being there in person or watching it on TV real time, but it was still an awesome experience.

Here is the link to the TV broadcast of the bottom of the ninth if you have not seen it.

A couple of really cool things about that broadcast:

1) Several times during Jason Heyward's at-bat but before his Grand Slam, the broadcast cut away to an older woman with very distinct fingernails crossing her fingers and raising her arms to the heavens above before each pitch. Too bad they did not cut to her to show her reaction when Heyward hit his Grand Slam.

2) It was really cool seeing Jason Heyward "looking out for" TV field reporter Kelly Crull during his on the field interview after the game as he warned her to get out of the way right before he got his "Gatorade Bath". Kelly told him when they resumed the interview that she greatly appreciated his looking out for her.

I have a few other observations that I picked up from that broadcast, but those are more "basebally intensive".

Hey Ken, & Other ‘76 Alumni

It was great to see other ‘76 Cubs fans, Jeff Yamane, Debbie Skatchke, June Yamasaki (Hori), Steve Yamasaki, Bob Hashimoto, Michelle Weiner (Milkovic), Kris Erickson, Maja Weisinger, Andy Flor, probably other too, I just didn’t see them. I heard there were approximately 700 Lane Tech Alumnus in attendance at the game!!

The entire evening was fun from my perspective. The icing on the cake though was Jason Heyward’s Grand Slam Home Run!!

Go Cubs Go!!

June K Hori (Yamasaki)

Thought we would see more alums out on the plaza before the game, but I guess most were already inside. Nice to see Bob Hashimoto and Kristy Adachi out there, as well as the great Wayne Messmer, who we chatted with for a few minutes. During the 5th inning, the Lane Tech Alumni got a shout-out on the video board.

I was too busy gabbing and didn't get many pictures but here are a couple.  I can see the back of Kristi's head and Jeff and Patty and Kathy and Kris and Maja just barely... and lots of 78ers.  I wish I'd gotten a picture of our color guard.  (all female!)  I heard from quite a few non-Lane friends who were there that night and texted asking if that was us making all that racket.  :)

Kristi, June and Michelle,

Thank you so much for posting that info about the Alumni Night Cubs game and for those awesome pictures.

I want to wish all the Dads out there a Happy Father's day.

The Humboldt Park area (where I grew up) will be hopping and buzzing this weekend with the Puerto Rican Parade and festival. Hopefully it will go calmly this year (unlike last year). So get your Salsa and Meringue shoes on!

So I'm out enjoying Father's Day with my daughter walking by Wrigley Field and I run into Ken Ortiz standing in line for the Wrigley tour.  It's a small world after all.

Bob,

It was great to see you there and meet your Daughter. You are right, it's a small world. Too bad we could not stay and catch up but they were starting the tour. Could you send me the pictures you took of us to me? I will post you my info.

Hello all,

I had a great time at Wrigleyville yesterday, we did fun stuff before the tour, we did the tour and we did fun stuff after the tour, so I have a lot of cool pictures. Here is one:

Happy Birthday Greg Znajda! Enjoy your special day.

Thanks for all the great Cubbie photos, folks!  Nice that Bob ran into Ken before the tour of Wrigley Field. Looking forward to the full report!

Are there any 76'ers living in Boston? Landing there tomorrow for my first-ever visit to Cape Cod (family wedding).
